SIEMENS BUSINESS SERVICES (Santa Clara)
Exchange Administrator, Contract 2/01-3/02

One of three Exchange administrators for the North American site of one of the largest Exchange 5.5 organizations in the world, personally responsible for approximately 6,000 Exchange seats. Daily tasks included troubleshooting MTA and replication issues, Outlook Form design, site documentation, migration from external UNIX mail relays to an all-Exchange solution, and third-level Exchange and Outlook support. Accomplishments included:

  • Performing hardware consolidation on 17 Exchange 5.5 servers, upgrading them to Windows 2000, and utilizing Dell server hardware on an all-Fibre Channel disk and tape backup subsystem
  • Diagnosis and resolution of massive Message Transfer Agent, replication and Internet Mail Service problems across five connected sites
  • Technical-writing projects, including disaster-recovery procedures and a Dell/Microsoft case study & white paper on an Exchange 5.5 deployment utilizing Dell's Fibre Channel server solution

WIND RIVER SYSTEMS (Alameda)
Exchange Administrator, Contract 8/99-2/01

Sole technical administrator and project manager for 1,000-seat Exchange environment. Key member of a worldwide acquisition and migration team that traveled to recently acquired offices and standardized systems to new corporate configurations. Migrated Exchange 5.5 servers into a common domain, ORG & Site name, naming standard & designed public folders and overhauling the SMTP mail design to take advantage of a redundant WAN. Migrated NT Workstations & Servers, WINS, DHCP, DNS and other network services to a common domain and hardware standards. Accomplishments included:

  • Designing WAN Exchange infrastructure, maximizing available bandwidth, and providing redundancy and high availability

Team lead of a 200-person Exchange site in a 200,000-person Exchange organization. Planned and implemented migration from Microsoft Mail 3.0 on OS/2 to Exchange 5.5 on Windows NT 4.0. Expanded Exchange site to include over 250 clients over four offices, then later joined the CIGNA Exchange infrastructure. Setup x.400 connections & Microsoft Mail connectors and implemented Outlook Web Access via IIS 4.0. Extensive research & experience in backups, database repair, Microsoft Outlook client support and form design. Accomplishments included:

  • Designing a disaster recovery and business continuity plan for Microsoft Exchange and Windows NT Server infrastructures
  • Providing third-level support for Windows NT Domain in the CIGNA Irvine office, including server performance, developing and auditing security & desktop system policies, and making hardware and software recommendations

Migrated Netware 3.12 servers and 9x & Macintosh OS to a Windows NT and TCP/IP based infrastructure. Migrated a three-office, two-server Microsoft Mail on Netware messaging system to Microsoft Exchange. Developed extensive backup procedure, public folder use and Outlook Web Access. Created a company-wide and cross-platform daily backup plan, with one Windows NT 4.0 server backing up Windows 95 and Windows NT Workstations, Macintoshes and Silicon Graphics systems.
