Did you know that almost two-thirds of the women in this country-and one in six men-are living with the aftermath of some form of sexual abuse?

These survivors hope, like other adults in committed relationships, to have meaningful emotional and sexual relationships with their partners. However, while the media depicts the struggles these survivors face as they try to heal emotionally and physically, seldom do we hear about the sexual impact of abuse, leaving many survivors to wonder why they are unable to experience the pleasures of a healthy sexual relationship.

Staci Hines, author of The Survivor's Guide to Sex, hopes to put an end to this situation with the release of Healing Sex: The Complete Guide to Sexual Wholeness, the DVD follow-up to her groundbreaking bestseller about learning to become a sexual being after recovering from abuse.

Produced by Generation Five and S.I.R. Video Productions, Healing Sex follows six ethnically diverse main characters as they work through the aftermath of sexual abuse, learning to re-experience intimacy, physical closeness and sexual desire.
While the filmmakers' commitment was to show real sexual experiences, the DVD is not sexually explicit. Using a workshop setting, the film features testimonials from survivors of sexual abuse, real people who discuss their journey through the process of sexual healing. Throughout the video, Haines acts as a guide and facilitator, talking one-on-one as she discusses the impact of abuse on adult sexual relationships.

Using a somatic (mind/body) approach that enables survivors to work out the normal, post-trauma "survival reactions"-fight, flight and freeze-that can affect their ongoing sexual relationships, Hines outlines different healing processes, demonstrating skills for re-building sexual relationships and helping viewers find their own paths to improved sexual health. With a sex-positive perspective that encourages choice, empowered consent and erotic expression, Hines enables viewers to believe: "You are more powerful than what happened to you."

STACI HINES, author of the bestselling The Survivor's Guide to Sex, leads courses training practitioners and therapists in using somatics to promote sexual healing.

GENERATION FIVE, founded by Hines, is a non-profit organization that works to end child sexual abuse within five generations. S.I.R. VIDEO PRODUCTIONS, based in San Francisco, makes sexual-education videos that provoke, inspire, arouse and uplift people's attitudes about sexual health.

"In making Healing Sex, we were committed to showing the real, post-trauma experiences so many survivors share. Our goal was to guide viewers in using somatic recovery techniques to help them become as happy and fulfilled as the real-life survivors profiled throughout the film," Staci Hines, Executive Director, Generation Five.
