Location Profile |
Underbelly Jay Gifford, an architecture maven and
20-year resident of San Francisco, is incredibly personable
and frighteningly well-informed. While explaining the
differences between Queen Anne, Italianate and Stick-Style
architecture, the informal Jay throws in a few juicy
historical anecdotes about the former locations of San
Francisco's hottest bordellos. He may even confide in you
that: "I get my best dirt from my clients"
It's Not
That Hard A wonderful look into the City's history, the
Victorian Home Walk is a must for anyone visiting or living in
San Francisco. The tour, which Jay founded five years ago,
usually consists of groups of fewer than 20 people. Don't be
afraid of getting winded—the undemanding (and tour-bus free)
route begins in Japantown and winds through the flats of
Pacific Heights. Tamar
Love
Mansions of the Rich and
Famous Let Jay be your Robin Leach as he
takes you by the Mrs. Doubtfire house, the Party
of Five house, and homes owned (or formerly owned)
by Robin Williams, Don Johnson, the late Mary
Martin, Tom Wolfe, Michael Tilson Thomas, Herb
Caen and Jessica McClintock. |
Bussin' The tour begins and ends
with a quick trip on MUNI: the 3 Jackson line
takes you there, the 45 Stockton takes you back.
However, your $1 fare and transfer is included in
the price of the tour. |
Take it Easy If you find the
Union Square meeting point inconvenient, pick up
the tour at The Queen Anne Hotel (1590 Sutter
Street) at 11:20am, where the tour pauses for an
internal exploration of a "typical" Victorian
bordello ... uh, finishing
school. | |
