The only thing wrong with Café Liliane is that it isn't open for dinner. Tucked into the lobby of one of the numerous design buildings populating the once-industrial region south of Market, east of Mission and north of Potrero Hills, Café Liliane is a true delight to the palate. Absolutely do not miss the soup, even if you "don't like that kind." I promise you, you will like whatever Haim Mimran makes that day - tomato pistou with crème fraiche, corn chowder with black beans, pureed carrot soup with dill, New England clam chowder, curried butternut squash, onion soup with red wine, roasted seasonal vegetables in consommé the list goes on indefinitely because he never seems to make the same soup twice. A hearty bowl served with olive bread is only $3.50, but you'll also want to try the excellent salads, all of which are tossed fresh in front of you. The café is famous for its Salade Nicoise, but the Caesar can't be beat. Make sure and try the sandwiches, too (everyone's favorite is the grilled cheese with avocado, basil/pesto sauce and red bell pepper), but avoid the tuna; it's just too weird. Breakfast is limited to the traditional baguette with butter and jam, and (of course) café au lait.
